How Pretty came to New York
About a year or so after I adopted Cody in Nov of 2003, I sent a letter to his old racing owner, Gary, letting him know I had adopted Collateraldamage who was now known as Cody. He wrote me a very nice letter back and told me a few things about Cody and his littermates. The funniest thing is that Cody used to be called “HOOT” in the kennels. And if you know Cody you can understand why. We stayed in contact via email every few weeks and he would always enjoy the pictures I sent to him of Cody in his retirement.
Then one day in April of 2005, during one of our conversation, Gary asked me if I had ever considered adopting a second greyhound and that Cody’s mom Pretty was still on the farm and he’d like her to find a couch. She was in no danger or anything and had actually just been hanging out on the farm for the past couple of years after her last litter. Pretty was his favorite and he thought about keeping her for his own pet but his living situation didn’t allow it but he did want her to find a couch. But if not, no big deal, she would stay on the farm where she was perfectly happy.
After the inital shock I said a big fat YES! What an honor. I of course didn’t tell anyone except two close friends and even then only one knew the exact day she would be arriving. Gary had all her vet work (shots and whatnot) done and arranged for her to be transported to me, from Kansas, via Messanger Hauling. And if you’ve never seen the Messanger hauler, well it’s an impressive sight…
Anyway… Pretty arrived on June 15th 2005 after about a 24hr journey from Kansas. Gary sent me an email in the morning letting me know the haulers time schedule and also mentioned that before she got on the hauler she rolled in a mud puddle in the turnout pen so will probably be a tad dirty. Silly girl! I guess she wanted to take some of Kansas with her.
Once I picked her up, home we went to get a bath and meet Cody. Everyone always asks me if they remember each other… well they didn’t say “MOM!” “SON!” when we walked in the door, but then again maybe they didn’t have time because I was rushing her to the bathroom to get cleaned up… boy was she dirty! LOL But they do seem to have a unique bond. They’ll lay next to each other, head to head or butt to butt which is something I never saw Cody with with any fosters. I’ve even caught him a few times laying on his mommas belly like he was a little pup, although he outweighs her now by about 20lbs.
This is Pretty the day she arrived from Kansas, after her bath of course. She turned 11 in November.
